New Gloucester Community Day
The New Gloucester Community Day is officially announcing that Fireworks will be on display October 19 @ 6:15 p.m. The New Gloucester Community Day is being held at the New Gloucester Fair Grounds. The day is full of games, food, local government agencies, music, all day entertainment, a car show, fireworks and MORE! Festivities kick off at 10:00am and will last til the sun goes down. Support local organizations and fundraising while "Connecting People To Community." For more information call 926-4142.

First Annual Craft Fair sponsored by Marblehead Chapter of DeMolay. To be held on Saturday, November 2, 2002 at the Windham Masonic Hall on River Rd. Table rentals are available but space is limited. A variety of gift items, baked goods, popcorn, hot dogs, and drinks are available. All proceeds from the rentals will go to the Shriner’s Hospital. New Gloucester Historical Society: The Abanaki-White Encounter in Maine. On Thursday, October 17, Alvin H. Morrison will discuss "From Conquest? to Casino?: The Abanaki-White Encounter in Maine" at the monthly meeting of The New Gloucester Historical Society. Dr. Morrison, a resident of Raymond, is Professor (Emeritus) of Anthropology at SUNY College at Fredonia, NY, and is an ethnohistorical anthropologist at Mawooshen Research. He and his wife Florence formerly lived in New Gloucester. The meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, 389 Intervale Rd. (Rt. 231).

American Legion Post # 86 Sponsors Blood Drive: The American Red Cross Blood Services, is urging all eligible blood donors in the Gray/New Gloucester area to give blood. Blood supplies have been steadily declining over the months and reserves of all types need to be dramatically increased in order to meet the needs of patients. Every day in the State of Maine, 300 pints of life-saving blood are needed. A Red Cross blood drive will be held on Monday, October 21, 2002 at the American Legion Hall in Gray. Donor hours are from 2 to 7 p.m. and all blood types are urgently needed at this time.

Get Graphic@your library is the theme of Teen Read Week this year, sponsored by the American Library Association, celebrated October 13-19. In connection with the theme the library has received a shipment of Graphic Novels, novels that cover a range of comic book style books. One of the more famous graphic novels is Art Speilgelman's Maus. Some of the graphic novels we have are Akiko Volumes 1,2, 3; Castle Waiting, Volumes 1 & 2; Usagi YoJimbo; The Wizard’s Tale; Batman Adventures ; Batman: The Gotham Adventures; Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. So Teens come on in and see our new collection purchased just for you!

Pumpkin Carving @your library: Families, come on in and carve a pumpkin on Tuesday, October 29. There is a limited number so please sign up either at the library or call 657-4110. The pumpkins will be displayed along the driveway at the Library on Halloween night. Also, as an alternative to Trick or Treating or the Town sponsored party, the Library is offering a small gathering with stories, crafts and refreshments from 6-8 on Thursday October 31. Let the library know if you are interested so we can plan appropriately.

AARP Driver Safety Course at the Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main Street, in Westbrook, for drivers 50 years of age and older will be presented on two consecutive Saturdays, November 9 and 16, 2002. Classes will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on each of the two dates. Participants must attend both sessions to complete the course. Registration fee is $10 per person and advance registration is required. Space is limited and reservations will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Maine Audubon to Hold 15th Annual Apple Day Festival: Falmouth, Maine —Maine Audubon will hold its 15th annual Apple Day festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, October 19 at Gilsland Farm in Falmouth. A family day of fun and celebration of the season, Apple Day is open to the public. Festivities include cider pressing, craft demonstrations, storytelling, face painting, live music, contra dancing, nature walks and an apple pie baking contest. At 11:30 a.m., Maine Audubon also will announce the winners of its 2002 "Wildlife Conservation Champion" awards, which are given to 50 Maine lawmakers for their consistent commitment to the protection of Maine’s wildlife and wildlife habitat. Scott B. Twitchell now at Morse, Payson & Noyes, in Portland. An affiliate of Banknorth Insurance Group Scott B. Twitchell is now an account executive for commercial lines for Northern New England. In his new position, he will be responsible for developing and servicing new commercial business. Before joining Banknorth Insurance Group, Twitchell served as vice president of operations and sales for Spire/Graphics Express Company, which has branches in Portland and Boston. A resident of Cumberland, Twitchell is a 1988 graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.

Shirley Minster, Ms.Ed, Director of Home Education & Family Services/Royal Academy, spoke on the topic "Adult Stages of Development (middle age to elderly)" at Equip 2002, Vision New England's annual education conference in Greenland, New Hampshire on September 28th.

Jean K. Gulliver of Falmouth and Richard J. Vail of South Portland named to Youth Alternatives Board of Trustees, a nationally accredited provider of services to children, youth and families throughout Maine. Youth Alternatives provides a full range of services, from prevention of child abuse and neglect to intensive intervention and safe-haven homes for youth. Vail is a financial consultant for A.G. Edwards and has more than 20 years of banking and finance experience.
