Gray--
At 3 p.m. on Friday, April 5, a G-NG school bus carrying
Russell Elementary School children was involved in
an accident at the intersection of Route 115 and Center
Street. No children were hurt. The substitute driver
was not injured. Gray Fire and rescue responded within
minutes, as did several Cumberland County Sheriffs
and two State Troopers.
The
car and bus collided head on while turning. The car
was severely damaged. The bus was less damaged, but
careful assessments concerning its repair will be
made by SAD 15 officials over the School vacation
week, which begins Monday. Arriving on the scene by
3:30 were Russell School Principal Ellen Beale and
Finance and Operations Director Brian McDonnell. Beale
said she rode the rest of the route with the children
to help calm their fears and McDonnell organized the
upcoming bus repair. A Cumberland County Sheriff's
Officer took statements from the children.
Two
State Troopers approach the Gray-New Gloucester School
bus, sidelined on Center Road after the accident.
No children were injured.
Gray
Fire-Rescue Volunteer Gary Latno sweeps glass from
under the damaged car. The auto was also leaking a
variety of fluids. Absorbent pads had been placed
on the pavement to catch the leaks. The car was left
where it was, on Route 115.
Two
Gray Fire rescue officers assess the situation. Scratch
marks can be seen on the bus's front bumper. Brian
McDonnell, SAD 15 Business and Finance Director, not
visible, is behind the bus talking on a cell phone.
One
of the children listens to the Sheriff as the Sheriff
takes statements from nearby children.
