Bethel Artist's "Language of Hands" Exhibit
at USM Library
Maine photographer Sally Taylor is exhibiting her
series of photographs of hands, "The Language
of Hands," in the UnumProvident Great Reading
Room in USM's Glickman Family Library, Forest Ave.,
Portland. The exhibit is open to the public during
library hours through Friday, December 10.
From 5-7 p.m. on Friday, October 15, there will be
a reception for the exhibit at which Taylor will speak.
Brenda Schertz, a USM lecturer in the Linguistics
Department, will discuss both the exhibit and nonverbal
expression. A sign language interpreter will be present
at the discussion. For more information, contact the

'Dreamscapes: Remo Farruggio' September 30-November
21, 2004
Featuring 13 oil paintings by Remo Farruggio. Works
painted in the 1940's depicting dark, nocturnal images
of Basin Street (its twin painting acquired in 1939
by the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and a surrealist
rending or a submarine sighted off the Maine coast
during W.W.II.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Poet Carl Dennis Reading
at USM
Carl Dennis, author of "Practical Gods,"
winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for poetry, will
read at USM on Friday, October 22. The free reading
will take place at 4 p.m. in the Glickman Family Library
Special Events Room.
A reception will follow, and his books will be available
for sale at the event.
Dennis received the 2000 Ruth Lilly Prize from Poetry
Magazine and the Modern Poetry Association for his
contribution to American poetry. His new book, "New
and Selected Poems 1974-2004," spans his career.
The New York Times has called Dennis' poetry "wise,
original, and deeply moving."
A resident of Buffalo, he is artist-in-residence at
the State University of New York. He says, "Poetry
is useful in that it allows readers to feel that they
are not alone, that others have thought and felt as
they have."

A Great Big Mystery Kicks Off L/A Arts 2004-05
Live Performances
There's a mystery to be solved and lots of fun to
be had when L/A Arts presents a DinoRock production,
The Great Dinosaur Mystery, as the first live performance
of the 2004-2005 Season.
The Great Dinosaur Mystery will be performed in Lewiston
on Friday, Oct. 22, at 10 a.m. in the Lewiston Middle
School auditorium. Tickets are only $3 per person.
Complimentary chaperone tickets are also available,
one free ticket for each group of 10 kids. No other
