Chamber Music Awards Recital at USM

Student from Gray performing
The best student chamber music ensembles at the University of Southern Maine, chosen by a jury panel, will exhibit their excellence in group performance at the annual Chamber Music Awards Recital at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2004. The USM School of Music presents this annual recital in Corthell Concert Hall on the Gorham campus. Admission is free and open to the public. The short recital begins with Eric Ewazen's "A Western Fanfare." Next, "Two Korean Folk Songs," an arrangement by Kelly Via, will be performed by a group coached by Jean Rosenblum. Four movements from Morton Gould's "Benny's Gig" will be performed. Finally, a trio coached by Dino Liva will end the evening with the second movement from Eric Ewazen's "Trio." The musicians include Eric Drew of Cranston, R.I., trumpet; Nathanael Erde of Gray, violin; and Ben Heller of Newcastle, piano.

USM BFA Thesis Exhibition At USM Art Gallery

The USM Art Department is pleased to announce its upcoming BFA thesis exhibition April 23 - May 7 at the Art Gallery in Gorham. The opening reception is Friday, April 23, 6-8 p.m. This exhibition represents a culminating experience for USM art majors. It features the resolution of each student's undergraduate art studies and is typically the student's first major exhibition of a cohesive group of work.

The sixteen students are each from a different town in Maine and represent a range of age and experience. They will display work in a wide variety of mediums: painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, and digital imaging.

Exhibiting local area students are Emily Branigan, North Yarmouth; Darcy Donald, Falmouth; Lisa Elizabeth, Yarmouth; Robin Greeley, Raymond.

Community Little Theatre's Broadway-LA from the Heart: Denise Knue, Costumer for Broadway-LA from the Heart, models one of several evening gowns she is designing for the joint fund raiser being presented by Community Little Theatre and Central Maine Medical Center. The two hour event directed by Vince Knue will be held April 24 and 25 at Lewiston Middle School, Central Ave. and will feature familiar and well loved tunes from Broadway musicals such as Evita, Phantom, My Fair Lady, Guys and Dolls, A Chorus Line, Anything Goes and Cabaret.

Openings in L/A Arts Summer Theatre Experience 2004


Looking for a fun summer experience for that special young person in your life? L/A Arts has a limited number of openings in its Summer Theatre Experience. Now in its 9th year, L/A Arts Summer Theatre is an undeniable success, offering two, three week sessions, each focusing on a different theatrical production. This summer, the July session will focus on an adaptation of the musical production "Into the Woods." Recommended ages for students in this session are 8 - 16. The August session will concentrate on the Shakespeare comedy "As You Like It." Recommended ages for students in this session are 10 - 16. Deadline for registration is May 1, 2004.

No previous theatrical experience is needed to enroll in the L/A Arts Summer Theatre program; students start at whatever level they are at and grow from there. Each participant is guaranteed a role in the production based on her/his preference and ability. L/A Arts Summer Theatre is a TOPS scholarship approved camp.
