Caught at the Crossroads

A whale of a time

Students at Russell Elementary School in Gray enjoy a program about Istar the humpback Whale, sponsored by the Children's Museum of Maine and UnumProvident.

They children learned that Istar, depicted in this full-scale gym-length blow up replica, was 32 years old and halfway through his life. Humpbacks can weigh up to 1,500 pounds which is much more than an elephant, drawing oohs and ahs from the children listening.

These students were from Mrs. Cleveland's first grade class and Mrs. Dunn's second grade class. Throughout the day, all the students at Russell School were rotated into the multi-purpose room to enjoy the program.
