Caught at the Crossroads

Amanda Ross of Gray pours another gallon of sap into her family's boiling syrup pots. Mom Tracy said that the process is simple. "It's just a boiling pot in the driveway. Easy." Although she said the first two years of drawing sap and learning the syrup process involved a high learning curve, the family is excited this year to see the results of their sweet success.

"We learned that although we have several maple trees, some trees do better than others," Tracy said. They found one tree in their yard to be a high-yield maple and they have already boiled down several quarts this season.

"Right here in the middle of Gray, here we are making maple syrup. Who knew?"

Pancakes anyone?

The Monument: Prata photo

From The Monument's office in the heart of Gray Village, we see a great many images pass by every day. Caught at the Crossroads is a snapshot of life in Gray. It's a chance to show that a great tapestry of community life is alive and well behind the traffic.
