Caught at the Crossroads

One of the grand old dames of architecture in Gray Village got a fresh coat of paint last weekend. She's now sporting a lovely new shade of red with green trim.
The Monument: Prata photo

The building in the photo at top is the one that has the triangular window. The complex oon the west side of Main Street (looking north) was built sometime in the 1830s. The brick building at left was the country store, then harness shops, tack shops and the ice cream parlor at the far end.

Gray Corner attracted trade from as far away as Vermont and was busy with travelers on their way to and from Portland. Hay, grain, food, and lodging were the prime demands during this time in Gray.
