Volunteers Needed For Traffic Duties
During a major disaster or evacuation, citizens can
help their neighbors and their local fire-rescue by
volunteering for temporary traffic control duties
at barricades or fire-rescue scenes. Floods, forest
wildfires, hurricanes and other disasters keep the
regular members and volunteers in a town's fire-rescue
service very busy during these unusual situations
so special volunteers are needed. But to be able to
control traffic safely, these volunteers must be trained
in advance.
The Gray Region Citizen Corps is gathering volunteers
from Yarmouth to Casco who are willing to help out
in some way during a major disaster in their region,
such as the Ice Storm of 1998. They provide monthly
educational seminars and the topic for Friday, March
12 will be on Traffic Control. The free seminar will
be held at Stimson Hall next to the monument in the
center of Gray, and will begin at 6:30pm. Past monthly
seminar topics have included chainsaw safety and pet
first aid. Future seminars are planned for bicycle
safety, fire extinguishers, shelter operations and
cooking without electricity. More information about
the Citizen Corps program may be found at www.citizencorps.gov.
Messages may be left with Gray Public Safety at 657-3931.
