Spring Business Break
May is here and the Gray Business Association is glad
to present the second 2004 Business Break to be held
at Spring Meadows Golf and Country Club in Gray on
Thursday, May 20th. There will be a social hour (with
cash bar and hors d'oeuvres) from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm,
followed by a very informative presentation by Rick
Dieffenbach from Allure Creative regarding your business
website.
Allure Creative's presentations are "aimed at
helping business people make better decisions about
their internet presence without having to understand
jargon and technology (bits and bytes)."
Community Tax Forum to be Held at Stimson Hall
in Gray
Gray Democrats, Green Independents, and Republicans,
in a joint effort, will host a Community Tax Forum
on Sunday, May 16 at Stimson Hall in Gray at 1:00
PM.
This is the second in a series of forums, and will
focus on the property tax issue.
Featured speakers are Jack Wibby of Tax Cap Now, the
political arm of Tax Cap Yes, who will give a presentation
in support of the MTAN 1% Property tax cap question
that will appear on the November ballot, and Jeff
Nevins of the Maine Municipal Association who will
speak in support of MMA's tax reform question that
will appear on the upcoming June 8 ballot.
A panel discussion will follow the presentations.
Guest panelists will include Rep. Sue Austin (R) Gray,
Rep. John Eder, (G) Portland, former Rep. Cliff Foster
(R) Gray, Rep. Joe Brannigan (D) Portland, and Rep
Lois Snowe-Mello (R) Poland, as well as local officials
yet to be announced.
All citizens are welcome to attend this free event
to hear details and discussion of these two proposals
and offer questions and comments.

GNGFC Fundraisers
Parking: Members of the GNG French Club will be happy
to help you find a parking spot this Friday and Saturday
(May 14 & 15) at the Fiddlehead Art and Cultural
Festival at the Pineland Campus. Donations for assisting
you in finding a parking spot will be gladly accepted.
Yard Sale: Mark your calendar for May 21 &
May 22 (Sat. & Sun) . This will be another fund
raiser for the GNG French Club's trip to France in
April of 2005. Stop by 3 Wayne Ave for a great yard
sale and help support the GNG French Club.
Citizen Corps Raffle
The Gray Region Citizen Corps will be holding a raffle
at their display table during the Gray Fire-Rescue
EMS Week Open House, on Sunday May 16th. The local
group of volunteers is raising funds to purchase equipment
in advance for those who choose to help their neighbors
during a large disaster such as the Ice Storm of 1998.
Equipment to be purchased would include hard hats,
reflective vests, supplies for a volunteer center,
and educational materials. Prizes will include personal
survival kit. The Gray Region Citizen Corps holds
an educational seminar monthly. The topic for June
will be Bicycle Safety.
Beans & ham: Saturday, May 22, 2004, beans,
ham, coleslaw, potato salad, Italian bread, pies,
and beverages. Highland Lake Congregational Church,

Blanchard Cemetery meeting: The annual meeting
of the Blanchard Cemetery Corporation will be held
at the Blanchard Cemetery office on Thursday, May
27, 2004, at 7 pm. There will be an election of officers
and vote on Bylaws changes. All members and lot owners
are encouraged to attend and participate.

New Gloucester EMS open house: New Gloucester
Fire-Rescue EMS will hold an Open House on Saturday,
May 22, from 9 am to 12 noon. Free blood pressures,
Informational packets, Tour of fire/rescue vehicles,
United Ambulance representatives, Displays of life-saving
equipment, CPR information & demonstrations Refreshment
table. Please join us and meet the personnel who are
your fire & rescue department. "There when
you need us".
Benefit dance: The 5th Annual Scholarship Benefit
Dance will be held at Spring Meadows Country Club
in Gray on May 21, 2004, from 7 pm to midnight. Music,
dancing, cash bar. Admission for adults over 21 only.
Singles $15, couples, $25. The Benefit is being held
in the memory of James Bonney, Shannon Davison, Danylle
Doyle, and Byron Gouzie.

Marianne Scott receives honor from Gordon College
WENHAM--Marianne Scott, the daughter of Norman and
Marlene Scott of Fairview Ave., Gray, was recently
named a 2004 Barrington Scholar from Gordon College
for her excellence and emerging potential as a scholar
as well as her demonstrated influence within and beyond
the classroom.
Scott, a sophomore at Gordon College, was a home schooled
student and completed her course of study in 2001.
She is recognized for her contributions and achievements
in the political studies and international affairs
major.
Gordon College is a nationally-ranked four-year, nondenominational
Christian liberal arts college on Boston's North Shore.
The college offers 36 majors in the liberal arts and
sciences. Over the years Gordon has won national recognition
for its general excellence, the high caliber of its
faculty and its role in character building.
Elizabeth Cole inducted into honor society
In a celebration of academic achievement, Elizabeth
M. Cole was inducted into Hebron Academy's chapter
of the Cum Laude Society on Friday, April 30, 2004.
Sixteen students were honored at the ceremony, which
included the induction of twelve new members and an
address by guest speaker Margaret T. McFadden, assistant
professor of American Studies at Colby College. Modeled
after Phi Beta Kappa, the Cum Laude Society was founded
in 1906 to recognize academic achievement in secondary
schools. Cum Laude now consists of nearly 350 chapters,
primarily in independent schools in the United States.
Membership in the Cum Laude Society is Hebron Academy's
highest academic honor. Elizabeth is the daughter
of Joanne and John Cole of New Gloucester.
Jim Contardo Promoted To Network Data Support Manager
Of Pine Tree Networks
Bar Mills, Maine - Pine Tree Networks announced that
it has promoted Jim Contardo to Network Data Support
Manager from his former position as a network technician
for their Integrated Telecomm Business Division based
on Oak Street in Portland. Contardo came to Pine Tree
Networks with over 25 years of data and telecommunications
industry experience. Previously, he worked with PSINet
and NorthPoint Communications as a senior-level field
engineer.
Brian Fejedelem Named Director Of Network Operations
And Data Networking Of Pine Tree Networks
Bar Mills, Maine - Pine Tree Networks announced that
it has hired Brian Fejedelem as Director of Network
Operations and Data Networking. In this capacity,
Fejedelem will direct both Data Networking department
and CLEC operations managers. His responsibilities
include making strategic equipment and workforce decisions
that support business and residential customers throughout
the Greater Portland, Lewiston/Auburn, Gray, New Gloucester,
Buxton, Hollis, and Waterboro areas. Fejedelem brought
nearly 10 years of telecommunications experience to
Pine Tree Networks. He was a former Operations Manager
in Maine and New Hampshire for Conversent Communications,
and Switch Manager for Worldcom in Portland.
