Gray Fire-Rescue's Annual Golf Classic is June 6

Spring has finally sprung, and golfers will be hitting the links in just a couple of weeks at Gray Fire-Rescue's Annual Golf Classic, Sunday, June 6, at Spring Meadows.

A four-player scramble format with a shotgun start at 12:30 pm, the tournament will benefit the equipment and training funds for Gray Fire-Rescue. There will be Hole-in-One prizes at several holes, featuring a brand new truck from Casco Bay Ford in Yarmouth and a John Deere lawn tractor from Hall Implements in Windham.

Prizes will be given for the longest Men's and Women's drives, for First-Place and Second-Place Net and First-place and Second-Place Gross; for closest to pin; and for the winners of chipping and putting contests. Other prizes are planned. The first 20 teams that register will receive special "Early Bird" gifts.

Local companies will be able to sponsor the tournament, selecting either a green or a pin, or both. Sponsors can also help with prizes and tournament souvenirs.

The day will end with a banquet and awards ceremony, provided by the Spring Meadows Banquet Center.

Anyone wishing to play in the tournament, or to sponsor the tournament, should contact Will Plummer at 207-831-3334 or Mike Barter at 207-650-7846. "Newswatch:" News from the around the world with the United States Army. In the current program - GCTV in Gray, Maine is acknowledged as one of the many stations to air Newswatch! The program is seen on GCTV on Mondays and Saturdays at 1:00 and 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Mondays and Saturdays.

Musicians of Maine: You can see Maine's home grown talent every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:00 p.m.

Maine-ly Issues: What are the issues facing every Mainer and what is being done to address those issues? Every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00 and 4:00 p.m.

GNG French Club Yard Sale Fundraiser

Ten Star All Star Basketball Camp
Final Applications are now being evaluated for The Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp. The Camp is by invitation only. Boys and Girls ages 10 - 19 are eligible to apply. Androscoggin Historical Society lecture: The Androscoggin Historical Society announces the final program in the Society's 2003-2004 lecture series. The topic will be "Alnobak: A Story of Indigenous People in Androscoggin County" and the speaker will be Nancy Lecompte. The event will be held on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at 7:00 pm at the High Street Congregational Church in Auburn. The meeting and lecture are free, open to the public, and are wheelchair accessible. Lions Club blood drive
: The Lions Club Blood Drive on Monday, May 24th is dedicated to Tom Ward. Tom died a few months ago of cancer, and his treatment required many units of blood. He was a blood donor himself and at his memorial service his daughter Kate Hossler, urged everyone to please give blood in honor of her father. Join us at the Newbegin Center in Gray on Monday the 24th between 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm and help someone who needs blood. You may save a life. Appointments are needed! Rebecca Hosley raising money for cancer: Gray resident Rebecca Hosley, 31, is training to complete a marathon in Dublin, Ireland on October 25, 2004, in order to raise money in the fight against Leukemia & Lymphoma. Hosley, whose boyfriend's mother recently died of leukemia, has a goal of raising about $4,000. Donations, no matter how large or small are sincerely appreciated. More than 75% of all donations go directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Women in Maine who are concerned about addiction -- their own or others' - may find help through the statewide Women's Project.

The Women's Project offers therapeutic support and assistance to women of all income levels who are struggling with addiction issues. It is staffed by caring, professional nurses. The program is free and confidential. Call 1-800-611-1588 in Southern Maine or 1-800-611-1779 in Northern Maine.

The Women's Project is funded by the state Office of Substance Abuse and administered through People's Regional Opportunity Program (PROP), a Community Action Agency.

Marianne Scott Receives Honor From Gordon College
WENHAM--Marianne Scott, the daughter of Norman and Marlene Scott of Fairview Ave., Gray, was recently named a 2004 Barrington Scholar from Gordon College for her excellence and emerging potential as a scholar as well as her demonstrated influence within and beyond the classroom.
Scott, a sophomore at Gordon College, was a home schooled student and completed her course of study in 2001. She is recognized for her contributions and achievements in the political studies and international affairs major.

Gordon College is a nationally-ranked four-year, nondenominational Christian liberal arts college on Boston's North Shore. The college offers 36 majors in the liberal arts and sciences. Over the years Gordon has won national recognition for its general excellence, the high caliber of its faculty and its role in character building.

Elizabeth Cole inducted into honor society
In a celebration of academic achievement, Elizabeth M. Cole was inducted into Hebron Academy's chapter of the Cum Laude Society on Friday, April 30, 2004. Sixteen students were honored at the ceremony, which included the induction of twelve new members and an address by guest speaker Margaret T. McFadden, assistant professor of American Studies at Colby College. Modeled after Phi Beta Kappa, the Cum Laude Society was founded in 1906 to recognize academic achievement in secondary schools. Cum Laude now consists of nearly 350 chapters, primarily in independent schools in the United States. Membership in the Cum Laude Society is Hebron Academy's highest academic honor. Elizabeth is the daughter of Joanne and John Cole of New Gloucester.

Jim Contardo Promoted To Network Data Support Manager Of Pine Tree Networks
Bar Mills, Maine - Pine Tree Networks announced that it has promoted Jim Contardo to Network Data Support Manager from his former position as a network technician for their Integrated Telecomm Business Division based on Oak Street in Portland. Contardo came to Pine Tree Networks with over 25 years of data and telecommunications industry experience. Previously, he worked with PSINet and NorthPoint Communications as a senior-level field engineer.

Brian Fejedelem Named Director Of Network Operations And Data Networking Of Pine Tree Networks
Bar Mills, Maine - Pine Tree Networks announced that it has hired Brian Fejedelem as Director of Network Operations and Data Networking. Fejedelem will direct both Data Networking department and CLEC operations managers. His responsibilities include making strategic equipment and workforce decisions that support business and residential customers throughout the Greater Portland, Lewiston/Auburn, Gray, New Gloucester, Buxton, Hollis, and Waterboro areas. Fejedelem brought nearly 10 years of telecommunications experience to Pine Tree Networks. He was a former Operations Manager in Maine and New Hampshire for Conversent Communications, and Switch Manager for Worldcom in Portland.

Local Chorus Earns First Place Medals A Fifth Time
The Yarmouth based Royal River Chorus of Sweet Adelines International earned first place medals for the fifth time in six years in mid-size regional competition recently.

The 59-voice a cappella women's chorus placed second overall, with scores high enough to qualify them for one of five wildcard slots in Sweet Adelines 2005 International Contest in New Orleans, LA.

Led by Master Director Christine Ferguson of Poland, Royal River competed with 21 choruses representing all New England states and Quebec, Canada.
