Letters to the Editor

To the Editor of the Monument and Citizens of Gray:

In last week's edition, Mr. Jim Monroe provided his comments about the November 2 elections and the preparations undertaken by town officials. The first part of his letter is based upon incorrect information.

While it is true that the Gray Town Council did approve a local referendum question, for some unknown reason Mr. Monroe believed that any person who had already voted by absentee ballot prior to October 5 would some how have to have their first ballot replaced by a second ballot thereby giving that voter the proverbial " Two bites of the same apple". Confusing and wrong.

For the November 2 election, the State ballots were printed and used for all absentee voting. These covered Federal and State issues only. When the local question was approved on October 5 we were required to print up a separate ballot that had only the local question on it. Because we are required to keep an accurate listing of all absentee ballot voters, every person who had already voted by absentee ballot was sent a local ballot only, with a return envelope.

Regardless of how each absentee voter exercised their rights on the local ballot, their Federal and State Ballot, as received, is secure and is counted! They cannot come back and submit a new absentee ballot for the Federal and State elections as Mr. Monroe would have a reader believe.

Town Manager

To the Editor:

While I am not surprised at New Gloucester Selectmen Chair Steve Libby's remark that "I don't recycle", I am disappointed by his lack of concern for the environment. Being a town leader, he is not setting a very good example for the rest of the public. It is a state law that ALL towns recycle a percentage of their waste. It is not a difficult thing to do. Every little bit helps.
