Gray Councilor resigns
By Elizabeth Prata

Gray--Gray Council chair Pam Wilkinson read Councilor Richard Barter's resignation letter at the regular Council meeting Tuesday. Wilkinson said she accepted it with deep regret. Barter had been elected two and a half years ago for a three-year term, which would have ended this June.

According to the Gray Town Charter, if a Councilor resigns then "The Town Council shall select an interim Councilor to serve until the next annual municipal election. The Interim Councilor shall serve until a successor is elected to fill the unexpired term." Right, At the polls in 2002. The Monument: Prata photo

Interested people should call the Gray Town Office at 657 3339 for more information, if interested in being appointed.

Barter's resignation letter states:

"There is a time for all seasons and I am afraid that it is time for my season on the Gray Town Council to come to a close. Timing is not everything but the Council is gearing up to confront some very real issues and concerns on several different area in the near future. If there is to be a transition better that it is now and not in the heat of new controversy.

My consultant work continues to increase, which requires increasing time out of state. At this point in time you do not need an "often absent" councilor as there is too much to do and everyone needs to be present to get on with this important work. Thus I submit my resignation effective this date but will be available until you are able to elect a suitable replacement.

My interest in the work of the Council continues to be high and I shall monitor the work of the Council with keen interest. I know the Council is driven by competent and committed councilors who have acquitted themselves well in the past and will continue to serve the citizens of Gray with distinction in the months and years ahead."
