Former
President Bush endorses Summers

Kennebunkport--Former President George Herbert Walker
Bush endorsed 1st District Congressional candidate
Charlie Summers Tuesday. Bush has not made endorsements
frequently in the past but chose Summers to endorse
because "No, I don't do it a lot, but like
what I see here," Bush said, speaking from
his Kennebunkport home, Walkers Point. The Monument:

Summers spoke of a strong defense industry in southern
Maine and his desire to serve on the Armed Services
Committee. Allen relinquished his seat on that Committee,
reducing the potential to influence defense contracts
with companies that employ thousands of Mainers
in the District, companies like Bath Iron Works,
Saco Defense, and others, Summers said.
Bush said, I feel strongly about this race. He's
moving in the right direction and if this helps
him I am glad to do it," Bush said of Summers.
Melanie Dees, spokesperson for Tom Allen for Congress,
issued the following statement today in response
to former President George H.W. Bush's endorsement
of Charlie Summers:
"Tom is proud of the endorsements he has received
from people here in Maine: the unions representing
the workers at BIW and the shipyard in Kittery;
the Maine Medical Association; the Veterans of Foreign
Wars; the Maine Council of Senior Citizens; the
list goes on. They acknowledge Tom's record as a
strong and effective advocate on behalf of the Maine
people and the issues they care about: a nation
secure at home and respected around the globe; a
strong, prosperous economy with good paying jobs
here in Maine; access to quality, affordable health
care; opportunity through good education; and a
clean, healthy environment." Above, US Congressman
