A Golfer's WIldest Dream
It was a sunny day with a little breeze. Poland Spring
Country Golf Club was the setting for Enterprise Rent-A-Car
to host a Special Olympic's charity fund raiser. On
the thirteenth hole Dan Wilkinson, 55 and of Gray,
took out his three wood after seeing the person in
front of him hit a ball and not make the green because
of the wind. His teammates Don Cobb of Gray, Tim Pomerleau
of Raymond and John Kosta of Gorham stood with him
watching the shot as all golfers do. They were unable
to see the hole on the green but the shot looked like
it was headed straight at the hole.
Suddenly, the lady monitoring the hole began jumping
and hollering. She watched the ball roll over two
mounds on the green and straight into the hole! Danny
had short a hole in one.
The slim odds that this would happen were on Danny's
side and he won the prize of 2005 Chevrolet Equinox
SUV worth $25,000.
Dan's first call was to his wife, Pam. His second
call was to the accountant.
The option of keeping the car or taking the $17,000
cash buy out offered by Viking Motors in Oxford has
been reviewed, and the cash wins. A donation to Special
Olympics is first on the list, the government wants
$6000 and the rest is left to Dan's many interests.
His team finished second in the scramble that day
but the memory will always will be considered a number
one day.
