Help
End Child Hunger in Maine
Bridgton--The newly formed Home Bakery Co-Op is sponsoring
a local Great American Bake Sale on Saturday, May
22, 2004 from 9 AM to Noon.
The new Café DeCarlo, at 163 Main Street (next
to Reny's) in downtown Bridgton, will be the site
for the bake sale. There's plenty of convenient parking.
To meet our $500 pledge we need lots of baked goods,
labeled please, and volunteers to help on the day.
All proceeds from our sale will go to Maine's Share
Our Strength (SOS) program. The Great American Bake
Sale's national web site is: http://www.greatamericanbakesale.org
At the site simply key in our bake sale number: 12795.
We've pledged to raise $500, but if you help, if you
bake, if you contribute, and if you spread the word,
that amount will be increased. When we receive pledges
and contributions totaling more than $500 we will
increase the amount of our contribution, which Lake
Region residents can track through the website.
While child hunger may seem like an overwhelming problem,
the good news is that a child nutrition safety net
already exists. Ending child hunger doesn't require
vast new resources or new programs; it requires that
all eligible children have access to regular meals
available to them through the existing nutrition programs.
SOS helps Maine kids by leveraging and directing existing
federal resources. SOS provides at-risk children with
regular, healthy meals especially during summer vacation
and during after-school activities.
For more information about how you can contribute
toward ending childhood hunger in Maine please call
George Bradt at 647-2389 or email: applewood1@verizon.net.
High honor for Gray Fire Chief
Gray-Gray Fire Chief Jon Barton was elected President
of the New England Association of Fire Chiefs, an
honor that caps a long and distinguished career.
Organized firefighting began in Gray during the 1880's.
Chief Barton began as a volunteer with the Gray department
in 1960. Gray Fire-Rescue (GFR) is an "on call
department" providing twenty-four hour fire and
medical emergency services to the Town of Gray. Chief
Barton oversees three stations, Central Station at
125 Shaker Road, Village Station on Main Street in
the center of Gray, and the Dry Mills Station. Services
include Emergency response to fires, medical emergencies,
motor vehicle accidents, and smoke/CO/medical alarms,
CPR Training, Volunteer support for special events,
Lectures to schools and organizations by special request,
and the Perpetual Bottle Drive (in front of Public
Safety Building). Proceeds support Gray Fire-Rescue
equipment and activities.
In 2000-01, Gray Fire-Rescue responded to 884 calls.
Barton became Gray's Chief in 1986. He will be installed
as New England Chief at a ceremony on June 26 in Springfield
MA.
Book and Bake Sales Successful Yard Sale Will Be Rescheduled
Submitted by Peter Gerardo, Library Trustee Chair
Thanks to our Patrons, the Gray Public Library Book
and Bake sales were very successful. We have come
to rely on your participation so that we may continue
to fund programs such as passes for the Gray Wildlife
Park, The Children's Museum, also the Children's Summer
Reading Program, and many other programs and events.
The efforts of the people who volunteer their time
to prepare for the sales, and help us the day of the
sales make it all possible. Some of the best bakers
anywhere supply the outstanding baked goods. We thank
you all for your outstanding efforts.
Regrettably, the Yard Sale was cancelled do to inclement
weather. It will be rescheduled, and we will advertise
well in advance in this publication.
