$1,300,974 to upgrade Gray-New Gloucester High School
(excerpted from the Sewall Report)

Gray--The State of Maine requires all School Departments to create a 10-year Capital Asset Renewal plan and submit it to the State. In order to complete the renewal plan, the SAD 15 needed to learn the current condition of their buildings. They hired the James W. Sewell Company, an engineering firm, to evaluate all SAD 15 buildings in terms of condition and what work will be required in order to keep them in good functioning condition. Each facility, building, or asset is ranked in terms of deficiencies and necessary improvements on a priority scale.

The SAD 15 High School complex consists of four components:

*the original High School, 42,760 square feet, built in 1962, with a replacement value of $3,963,852, and reported to need $612,094 in repairs

*the addition, 60,875 square feet, built in 1976, with a replacement value of $5,643,113, and reported to need $553,719 in repairs

*the visual and performing arts building, 12,330 square feet, built in 1972, with a replacement value of $1,142,991, and reported to need $117,695 in repairs

*a small portable, 720 square feet, built in 1987, with a replacement value of $52,344, and reported to need $17,466 in repairs.

The five most costly upgrades/repairs identified in the report are:

$102,190 to deal with poor stringers in the east gym (original)
$101,870 for ceiling finishes (addition)
$81,558 for ventilation pipes in the west gym (addition)
$77,896 for exterior doors (addition)
$77,301 for modernizing bleachers in the east gym (original)
All items were rated by urgency:
$384,975 currently critical
$406,034 potentially critical
$190,151 necessary but not yet critical
$212,320 recommended
$107,494 does not meet code
