SAD #15 to ask for money to improve buildings
Developing a November '04 Warrant

The Facilities Committee has presented its Year End Review to the School Board. Included in that review were an overview for 2003/2004, committee work completed this past year, and projected work for the new school year.

Work for 2004/2005:
The Committee will develop the Warrant for renovation funding to go before the voters in November to address the category 1 & 2 Life Safety issues brought forth by the Sewell Report. (The Sewell Report rated each item by priority: 1 for currently critical, 2 for potentially critical, 3 for necessary but not yet critical, 4 for recommended, and 5 for not meeting code. Items were also labeled by the type of category that they impacted, such as energy, life safety, ADA accessibility, air quality, appearance, functionality, and building integrity.)

The Committee will also evaluate programming needs of each of the buildings to ensure that the Warrant contains the funding to address any programming requirements that the District may wish to address while completing the life safety renovations. These program issues involve science labs at the high school, removal of the portable at Dunn and replacing with new classrooms physically attached to the building.

Overview:
Last year, the District had completed its asbestos abatement at Russell and Memorial and the reorganization of all three elementary schools into the current configuration of two K-2 and one 3-5 schools. The Pennell Ad-Hoc committee finalized its deliberations with the Town Council of Gray and the Board of Selectmen for New Gloucester. The James Sewell Company completed an Asset Renewal Plan assessment in March and the District continues to evaluate the information in that report.

Work completed:
The Pennell Ad Hoc Committee recommended returning the Pennell assets to the Town of Gray in exchange for a long-term leases for the District's Central Office staff.

The Facilities Committee began the process of converting the 10-year maintenance plan into an asset renewal plan using information from the Sewell Report. The Report gives the SAD a better understanding of what renovations or repairs need to be conducted and assigns an approximate cost to each item.

Dunn School will have an improved lower ball field to be used for recess, physical education classes and other community activities.
