State Public Safety Agencies now under one roof

Augusta -- For the first time in decades the majority of bureaus within the Maine Department of Public Safety will be under one roof by the end of the week.

The move of the department to the Central Maine Commerce Center at 500 Civic Center Drive in Augusta began over the weekend and continues throughout this week. Public Safety Commissioner Michael P. Cantara said the move will consolidate four separate office locations currently located in Augusta and Gardiner. The commissioner said the move will allow for greater efficiency, coordination and communication for the department and the public by having his office, six of the department's eight bureaus and 120 Public Safety employees in one location.

Relocating to the new building is Public Safety's front office from 18 Meadow Road in Augusta; State Police administration and the State Bureau of identification from 36 Hospital Street in Augusta and Maine EMS from
18 Edison Drive in Augusta.

Moving from Public Safety's office complex in Gardiner to the new offices are the State Fire Marshal's Office, Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, Liquor, Gaming and Weapons Licensing, and internal affairs. Moving into the vacated space of the State Police building at 36 Hospital Street are the State Police criminal investigation division, Fire Marshal investigators and the State Police Traffic Division.

Later in the year, the State Police regional communication center at 36 Hospital Street will also relocate to the new facility, The State Police garage, currently on outer Riverside Drive in Augusta, will also locate to the site later in the year. Cantara said there may be some disruptions in telephone and computer service to the department as the move takes place throughout the week. Emergency calls will continue to be unaffected to the State Police Regional Communications Center in Augusta---624-7000; 1-800-452-4664 or 911.
