Marcia Scott's Drive to Success
By Pam Kinney

Gray--Cruising around Gray, you may pass a sporty, silver Grand Prix with the license plate reading "MKMAGIC." Inside, you will find an eternal optimist who is running a successful business and managing it around her busy family life. Meet Marcia Scott.

As an Independent Sales Director for Mary Kay, Marcia began selling cosmetics twelve years ago. "I started doing this as a fun little hobby-a girlfriend thing," she explains. "Then I decided to step it up to do more sales." With that motivation, she was able to eventually leave her position as a News Producer for Channel 6 and concentrate on a career with Mary Kay.

Based in Dallas, Texas, this 40 year-old company offers business opportunities to more than 1/2 million people worldwide. Recently, Marcia earned her fourth car as a Sales Director who trains/mentors 70 women in seven states to start their own small business.

Marcia describes the Mary Kay culture as an environment where women are most supportive of each other. For example, she conducts workshops twice a month for associates to brainstorm and motivate one another. One of the best perks of her career is the success stories of helping these women "break a financial barrier." For instance, one of her associates had been living in a basement trying to make ends meet by working at a fast food chain. Once she started her own business through Mary Kay, she was able to build the dream home she had always wanted. Above, Scott with her Grand Prix. The Monument: Pam Kinney photo

Marcia's advice for someone considering self-employment is straightforward. "Sell a product that is consumable," she says. And, "No matter what the business is, don't be afraid to ask for help." Another point she emphasizes is the importance of a positive attitude. "Control what you can and let go of the rest," she says.

Where did Marcia get so much enthusiasm? No doubt it is a trait she inherited from her mother whom she refers to as her hero. "She's my biggest cheerleader," she adds with a smile.

Marcia lives on Blueberry Lane in Gray with her husband Mike and two children Jamie and Scott.
