I
am so proud of this community. The Gray Town Council
held its Annual Volunteer recognition Banquet at Spring
Meadows Friday night, and this one was packed. The
tables were filled, centerpieces beautifully arranged,
attendees dressed to the nines. They were all there
visibly share in the intangible thing that we call
'community.'
Those volunteers, with spouses and partners, toil
in near and far corners of the town, doing good works
and giving back to the spot they call home, all in
order to make it a better place. They work hard, they
bring skills to the table that the local municipality
might not have access to, they help transform a collection
of houses of our bedroom suburb into a commnity, they
engage in a fundamental act of citizenship and philanthropy.
They are invaluable.
Volunteers contribute to change in a community, and
in doing so, change themselves. Lives are enhanced,
others and their own. They don't work for money, instead,
they work for equally important forms of compensation
such as satisfaction, appreciation and the opportunity
to build skills. Their offering of their time, their
energy and their skills is an remarkable thing, and
Friday night, the Gray Town Council regarded it as
the gift that it is.
Friday night the Council recognized the committees
and individuals who make a difference, they said 'thank
you,' and they spent some time personally visiting
with individuals, letting them know that their value
is appreciated.
