Trek Across Maine: Those who are interested in learning more about the Trek Across Maine are invited to join the American Lung Association of Maine (ALA-ME) at their second annual Trekker Party on Saturday, February 19, 2005, from 1-4 p.m. at the Portland Marriott at Sable Oaks in South Portland.

The Trek Across Maine is a 3-day, 180 mile cycling event which takes place annually over Father's Day Weekend, beginning at Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry and ending in Rockland. Last year, more than 1,600 riders raised $1.2 million to support ALA-ME's lung health efforts in Maine. This year's goal is to recruit 2,200 registrants for the event, which will take place June 17-19 2005. While there is no cost to attend the Trekker Party, pre-registration is requested. Those wishing to attend the Trek Party should contact Sue Grenier at: 1-888-241-6566 x 116 or sgrenier@mainelung.org.

For the Love of Animals: A Valentine's Day Open House on Saturday, February 12, from 1-4pm will signal the beginning of the 2005 Annual Fund and Membership Drive for the Coastal Humane Society. The Society this year will strive to address the need for additional space to house the large number of cats CHS takes in each year. CHS does not euthanize for lack of space, time limit, treatable illness or injury, and cares for as many as 300 cats and kittens during the busy summer and fall months.
CHS intends to purchase a modular unit to house those cats and kittens which must be kept in isolation because they are ill, unsocialized, not yet tested, vaccinated, treated, or otherwise readied for adoption. Such a unit would replace the current isolation housing which is severely outdated and insufficiently large.
The Open House will feature refreshments, door prizes, raffles, and tours of the facility.
