First Graders Help the Ronald McDonald House
During
the school year 2004-2005 the first graders in Mrs.
Haymon's class at Memorial School collected 262 pounds
of ring tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Portland.
The students begin each September by being assigned
a classroom at Memorial that they will collect tabs
from each month. After getting their tab classroom
each team makes a "house" for their tab
classroom. This "house"gives the students
in their tab classroom a place to put their tabs as
they bring them to school.
Each month tabs are collected, weighed and tallied.
All tabs are kept until June when the final count
of tabs and total amount of pounds is shared with
the entire school at the last school meeting. In June
this years' class was proud to announce that they
had collected 262 pounds of tabs. The first graders
worked during math time and determined that t262 pounds
of tabs equals approximately 3,610,264 tabs.
Sixteen large boxes full of tabs were delivered to
the Ronald McDonald House on Brackett Street in Portland.
The Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home
from families who need a place to stay because their
critically ill child is sin an area hospital. The
house riles totally on contributions to maintain itself.
Families who stay there do so free of charge.
How does 262 pounds3,610,264 of tabs help maintain
the Ronald McDonald House? The tabs are sold at the
market rate for aluminum and that money is then used
to maintain the needs of the house. Not only does
the house provide beds, showers, soap, warmth, laundry
and food but it also gives families struggling with
the critical illness of their child a place to take
and come home to at the end of a long emotional day.
The motto of the Ronald McDonald House is "the
house that love built."
The first graders in Mrs. Haymon's class worked very
hard to keep that motto going strong. They showed
that you are never too young to do community services.

Wild
Turkeys and Bow Hunting
At the Maine Wildlife Parkon Saruday, August 6, The
Maine Chapter of the Wild Turkey Federation will set
up and staff a display from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring
the wild turkey. Wild turkeys were eliminated from
their native Maine range by the late 1800s, but have
been restored to the state and New England in ever
increasing numbers through the efforts and contributions
of the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Maine
Chapter of the WTF.
At the same time, the Maine Bow Hunters Association
will also be on hand with a display and to answer
questions about the growing sport of Bow Hunting.
Special archery seasons have increased bow hunting
opportunities, especially in more urban areas where
firearms are prohibited. Many urban and suburban landowners
encourage bow hunters where large local deer populations
are troublesome. For more information about any of
these programs, please call the Maine Wildlife Park
at 207-657-4977 or check us out online at www.mainewildlifepark.com
