Smorgasbord Supper

There will be an "All-You-Can-Eat" Smorgasbord Supper at the Sabbathday Lake Grange on Old Rte. 26 in New Gloucester on Saturday, August 20th from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Adults: $6; Children under 12: $3.

Public Supper - to benefit Child Welfare, August 6th - 5:00 to 6:00 PM - American Legion, 15 Lewiston Rd., Gray. Beans, Chop Suey, Cole Slaw, Hot Dogs, Breads And Pies. Adults $5.50, Children U/12 Yrs $2.50, U/5 Yrs Free.

Honor The Animals Pow Wow

On Saturday August 13th & 14th the first ever 'honor The Animals' Pow Wow will take place at the Maine Wildlife Park, Route 26 in Gray from 9:30-4:30 on both Saturday and Sunday. There will be Native American drumming and dancing demonstrations, craft vendors, singers and traditional foods.
Dancers with regalia will be admitted to the park for free on those 2 days only. Representatives of the Maine Abenaki, MicMac & Passamaquoddy tribes will be in attendance as vendors and presenters, and Native Americans from NH & Mass are expected to be at the park as well. All proceeds from the POW WOW are being directed towards new exhibits for our red and gray foxes. Regular admission fees will be charged.

Friends of Feral Felines Yard Sale

A yard sale to benefit Friends of Feral Felines will be held Saturday, August 20th from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 7 Arlington Street in Westbrook. To donate or FMI, call 854-8623.

Interfaith talk

The Interfaith Outreach Committee of Congregation Bet Ha'am, 81 Westbrook St., South Portland, invites you to a presentation by Edmund Case, president and publisher of InterfaithFamily.com, a resource for interfaith families who are exploring a Jewish life.

Mr. Case has created an advocacy network that works to foster a Jewish community that is genuinely open, welcoming and inclusive. The network advocates for attitudes, policies and practices that Jewish organizations and leaders can use to engage and include interfaith families within the Jewish community.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Residents of Gray, New Gloucester, North Yarmouth, and Pownal, there will be a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Saturday August 27th from 9-1. Gasoline, pesticides, paint strippers, oil-based paints, furniture polish and many other substances will be accepted. Watch for a full list to be published in the weeks prior to the collection, or call Randy Cookson at The Gray Transfer Station 657-2343. Remember to bring your proof of residency!

Army & Air Force Hometown News

Army National Guard Pvt. Matthew R. Deister has graduated from the field services specialist advanced individual course at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Va. This new Army military occupational specialty incorporates both the laundry and shower specialist and the fabric repair specialist courses into one career field. The soldier is trained to operate and perform preventive maintenance on laundry and shower units, delousing equipment, and decontamination gear; and use washing formulas and materials cleaning procedures; also, learns to inspect, mark, classify, resize, and repair Army clothing as well as repair of canvas and webbed equipment; sew, patch, darn and baste worn or damaged fabrics; and operate and maintain sewing, darning, and button machines.

Deister is the son of Richard J. and Barbar A. Deister of Justin Merrill Road, Buxton, Maine. He is a 2004 graduate of Gray-New Gloucester High School, Gray, Maine.

Optometrist honored

Optometrist, Dr. Blaine A. Littlefield of Brunswick and Freeport is among 173 optometrists throughout the United States who have received the American Optometric Association'' 2005 continuing Recognition Award. The award is given to doctors of optometry who have completed 50 credit hours of continuing education in their field over a one-year period and, in addition, have previously received the Initial Optometric Recognition Award. Over 1,700 of the nation's 36,500 practicing optometrists have earned the Initial Optometric Recognition Award. It is given to those who have completed 150 hours of continuing education in their field over a consecutive three-year period.
