Smorgasbord Supper

There will be an "All-You-Can-Eat" Smorgasbord Supper at the Sabbathday Lake Grange on Old Rte. 26 in New Gloucester on Saturday, August 20th from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Adults: $6; Children under 12: $3.

Honor The Animals Pow Wow

On Saturday August 13th & 14th the first ever 'honor The Animals' Pow Wow will take place at the Maine Wildlife Park, Route 26 in Gray from 9:30-4:30 on both Saturday and Sunday. There will be Native American drumming and dancing demonstrations, craft vendors, singers and traditional foods.
Dancers with regalia will be admitted to the park for free on those 2 days only. Representatives of the Maine Abenaki, MicMac & Passamaquoddy tribes will be in attendance as vendors and presenters, and Native Americans from NH & Mass are expected to be at the park as well. All proceeds from the POW WOW are being directed towards new exhibits for our red and gray foxes. Regular admission fees will be charged.

Visit the One Room School

The Dry Mills School will be open On Saturday, August 13, from 1:00 - 3:00. Cora Skilling, who attended the one room school as a child and is also on the Committee for the school, will be your hostess for that day. The school is located on the road to the Maine Wildlife Park.

Fireside Friends RV group meeting:

Fun, fun, fun. Are you interested in doing more camping? The Fireside Friends #28 in South Paris is a Good Sam's Club of Maine. The club goes to campgrounds all over Maine and New Hampshire. You can meet people from all over the United States at the Good Sam Rallies that are in the spring and fall, usually one in Fryeburg and Skowhegan Maine. No matter if you have a large RV or a small one, you are always welcome. We meet at the Norway Town Office building the 4th Monday of each month. We have a brown bag meal (bring your own). We gather at 6:15 and eat at 6:30. Our meeting begins at 7:00 and we are ready to go home by 8:00. Come join us at one of our meetings as a guest. If you like us, you can join the chapter. SMVA meeting:

The Southern Maine Volkssport Association invites you to attend its monthly meeting to be held Wednesday August 10 at 7 p.m. at the Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main Street, Westbrook. Join us for our weekend American Folk festival walks in Bangor on August 27th and 28th. The meeting and activities are open to all, and everyone is welcome.

Shaker bake sale:

The Friends of the Shakers will be holding a Shaker Bake Sale on Saturday, August 13, 2005 at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on Rt. 26 in New Gloucester, ME. The bake sake will start at 10 a.m. and will feature goods baked from Shaker recipes, including such items as apple brownies, spice cupcakes and shaker apple pie. Sr. Frances Carr will be signing copies of her cookbook, "Shaker Your Plate of Shaker Cooks and Cooking", from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The cookbook features both old and new recipes, including recollections of Shaker cooks and community life. Cookbooks will be available for purchase at the Village.

Chair caning workshop:

Learn the 7-step method of chair caning at this workshop on Saturday, August 27, 2005 from 9 am to 4 pm at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on Rt. 26 in New Gloucester, ME.. Bring a chair with a hand woven seat. The fee is $30, materials are provided, pre-registration required. For more information call (207)926-4597.

Woodworking workshop:

The Shakers are world famous for their furniture. Learn how to make a Shaker-style handmade hanging wall cupboard with shelves in this workshop held on Saturday, August 27, 2005 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on Rt. 26 in New Gloucester, ME. The instructor is Dan Grecoe whose work is sold at the Shaker Store and the Shaker Museum Reception Center. The fee is $40, materials are provided, and pre-registration is required. Nature walk:

A guided tour through the fields and forests of Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Rt. 26 in New Gloucester, ME will be the feature of a Nature Walk held there on August 20, 2005 at both 10 am and 1:30 pm. Highlights of the walk will be Loon's Point and Aurelia's Cascade as well as seasonal flora and fauna. The cost is $5 for adults, $2 for children, free for children under 6. Gem and mineral show:

The Kennebec Rocks and Minerals Club 16th annual Rockhounders Gem and Mineral show will be held September 3 and 4, 2005 at the National Guard Armory on Western Ave in Augusta, ME. Hours are Saturday 10 am - 5 pm and Sunday 10 am - 4 pm. Dealers and info call 873-6270. Door prizes, daily grand door prize, demonstrations in faceting, cabbing and lapidary, fluorescent display booth, mineral displays, dealers in minerals, jewelry, gems and fossils, mineral mine and other games for the kids. The Annual Southern Maine Post Card Show

Gilsland Farm Public Programs

Summer Bird-banding Demonstrations

Again this year, Maine Audubon staff will be banding birds at Gilsland Farm. Every ten days, "mist nets" are set up around the property to capture songbirds that are using it during the breeding season. Before being released, each bird is measured, weighed, examined for health and indications of breeding, and fitted with a numbered leg band. This information becomes part of a continent-wide database to help researchers better understand bird biology. All banding sessions are open to the public and are fascinating to observe for adults and children alike. Thursday, August 18; and Saturday August 27, 9-11 a.m., Free, Weather permitting.

Junior Naturalists' Club: Exploring the Shore

This program is designed for young people ages 10-13 who have an interest in wildlife and natural history. Every other month students get together and explore a different topic, visiting habitats, searching for wildlife, and studying behavior. This month we will explore the rocky coast and sandy shores of southern Maine, taking an ecological look at tide pools, dunes, and beaches. Students should be dressed to be outside all morning and bring lunch, water, and a snack. Saturday, August 13, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., $24/member, $32/nonmember, Limited to eight participants. Advance registration necessary.

Directions Craft Show

With more than 60 of Maine's finest craftspeople showing and selling their work at Gilsland Farm, the annual Directions craft show is always a fantastic event. Featured merchandise includes hand-woven clothing, jewelry, basketry, pottery, woodcarvings, and more. Entry-fee donations support Maine Audubon. Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. $3 suggested donation.
