Happy
Hands Play Group resumes Wednesday October 5,
2005. The group is open to the public and meets each
Wednesday in the New Begin Center basement from 9:30
to 11 a.m. The cost is 50 cents per child and covers
the cost of a snack. Parents or caregivers are to
remain with their children over the duration of the
session. The late start is due to renovations at the

Show: The Windham Athletic Boosters are sponsoring
the Windham Auto Show on Sunday, September 11, on
Route 302 Windham, behind Wal-Mart. The show runs
from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission starts at 8,
registration for show participants is from 8 to 11
a.m., judging is at 11:00 a.m., and the awards are
at 2:30 p.m. Concessions. This is the 12th Annual
Auto Show with 29 categories. Proceeds from the show
go to the Windham Athletic Boosters 2005/2006 budget,
a portion of which goes to the Endowment Fund.
Antique
show: The 76th Annual Maine Antique Dealers' Association
Show will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September
17 and 18 at the Racket and Fitness Center, 2445 Congress
St in Portland. Show hours are 10-5 on Saturday and
10-4 on Sunday. The show will house 68 dealers from
Maine and around the country in elegant room style

meeting: The Southern Maine Volkssport Association

Extension
will honor volunteers: The University of Maine
Cooperative Extension will hold it's annual meeting
to honor volunteers. The public is invited to the
Cumberland County Extension Association's 2005 Annual
Meeting scheduled for 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, September
21, 2005, at Camp Sunshine, 35 Acadia Road in Casco.
The event is free and open to the public. For directions

from Camp Sunshine will give the keynote address.
Martin Berwick, Master Gardener, will also give a
presentation about the therapeutic gardens he has
helped design and maintains at the Camp. The meeting
will be followed by a dessert social, serving entries
in the Pie Bake-Off Contest. The Extension is grateful
to the hundreds of volunteers in Cumberland County
for the great work they contribute to Extension programs
in their communities, and will be honoring many outstanding
volunteers.
Growing
pumpkins and squash for cash: The University of
Maine Cooperative Extension has scheduled a three-session
course entitled "Growing Pumpkins, Squash and
Gourds as a Cash Crop" to be held during the
month of September. The course is designed for serious
gardeners and small farmers. Learn how to successfully
grow pumpkins, squash and gourds in Maine.
Topics to be covered include market feasibility, variety
selection, site selection, irrigation methods and
merchandising. Extension Small Fruit Specialist Mark
Hutton will lead the sessions scheduled for Monday,
September 12 from 7-9 pm at the Maine Forest Service
on Route 26 in Gray; Saturday, September 17 from 9am
to 2:30 pm at Highmoor Farm, Route 22 in Monmouth;
and Thursday, September 22 from 7-9 pm at the Maine
Forest Service, Route 26 in Gray. The cost of the
course is $75 per person or couple and includes the
textbook Pumpkin Production Guide, or $50 without
the textbook.

in growing garlic: The University of Maine Cooperative
Extension is offering a course entitled "The
Allure of Garlic" on Tuesday evenings, September
13, 20, and 27 from 6:30-8:30 pm at Falmouth Middle
School, 52 Woodville Road. Fall is the perfect time
to plant garlic and this class will teach participants
how to grow garlic, from soil preparation to harvest.
Participants will also learn about the history of
garlic, its nutritional value and claims to prevent
ailments.
The final session will be a cooking demonstration
and tasting. The sessions will be taught by Aurelia
Scott, Master Gardener, Laurie Jean Kelly, owner of
Steeplebush Farm Herbs in Limington, and Kathleen
Savoie, a registered dietician. The cost is $75 per
person or couple and includes the textbook Growing

Greyhound Placement Service Open House
The
Maine Greyhound Placement Service (MGPS), a non-profit,
volunteer-based organization dedicated to finding
homes for retired racing greyhounds is holding an
Open House at their Adoption Center in Augusta on
Sept 17-18, 2005.
The entire Maine community is invited to meet the
retired greyhounds, talk to greyhound owners and learn
what wonderful pets greyhounds make as well as find
out about MGPS's plans for building a new off-hours
emergency vet clinic in Augusta. Many fun activities
are planned: Maine State Police K-9 unit, animal communicator,
animal massage therapist, veterinary info booth, doggie
spa, raffles, silent auction, contests, dog ware and
supplies, door prizes, food and more. Greyhound adoption
information will be available. Where: Maine Greyhound
Placement Service Adoption Center, 249 Old Belgrade
Road (directly across from the Maine Veterans Cemetery
back entrance), Augusta from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both
days (rain or shine).
Admission is $5 for adults, children under 14 free.

Saturday September 10 the Greater Portland Chapter
will hold its September Meeting in the Conference

seeks storage space
Androscoggin
Habitat for Humanity is looking for space to store
construction materials. Peter van Oosten, a member
of the group's Board of Directors, said the ideal
space would be in the Lewiston-Auburn area and would
have at least 5,000 square feet and a loading dock.
He can be reached at 946-4939. Several business firms
and individuals are expected to make donations that
can be used in building houses but there is no place
available to store the materials. Persons interested
in helping build the house should call Sally Belisle
