Gray Pack 86 Sign Up Night

Gray Pack 86 Cub Scouts will be enrolling new scouts on Tuesday, September 20, at 6:30 p.m. at Russell School. Any boys from first to fifth grade are invited.

Cub Scouting is an organization where young boys learn to develop strong character and leadership skills in a group atmosphere. Each age level is organized into a den(s) which participates in age-appropriate activities such as hiking and camping, Pine Wood Derby car construction, acting out skits, earning badges, etc. Each den has a leader (usually a scout parent) and meets two to three times per month. Dens get together one time per month for a Pack meeting, where upcoming activities are discussed and organized, and awards are given to each scout as they earn them.
For more information, please feel free to check out the Pack 86 web site - www.geocities.com/pack86gray, or call Greg Bartholomae, Pack Cubmaster, at 428-3569.

Sabbathday Lake Grange Holds Education Night

New Gloucester--Sabbathday Lake Grange #365 held Education and Past Master & Past Lecturers Night last Friday evening. Worthy Master Steven Haycock introduced Tracey Burnell, past master of Sabbathday Lake Grange, as the Master for the evening, he then turned over to Education Chairperson Bernice Edwards, who introduced the remaining guest officers.

A letter was received asking for a donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital it was voted to donate $10. Norma Meserve reported that once again someone had tried to break into the hall, but was scared off by our burglar alarm. They did break the back door window though. She also reminded the Grange that the kitchen roof was still in need of repair, and it leaks whenever it rains. If anyone reading this article would be able to help us with our leaking roof please call Steven Haycock at 998-2783.

Steven Haycock read resolutions to be considered by the Grange, it was decided to forward all four resolutions to State Grange. The Masters of the National and State Grange are asking all Grange members to donate money toward the relief efforts in the Gulf Coast. All money collected will be donated to worthy charity at State Grange in Oct. We will have a collection jar at our public supper on Sept 17 for any and all who would like to donate.
A recess was then called for the Lecturer's Program by Bernice.

The highlight of the program was the speaker, Susan Gendron, Commissioner of Education for the State of Maine. She spoke on the State's plan to give high school juniors the SAT's instead of the MEA's. This would make Maine the first state in the nation to give juniors the SAT's as part of the curriculum. The state will also be paying for the cost of the SAT's. She also commented that high school juniors this year will start taking the SAT's in April.

There were 14 Past Masters and 13 Past Lecturers present, and our guest included the National Grange Junior Development Director, members of the Agriculture & Legislative committees of the Maine State Grange. We also had Deputies of the State Grange and the Director of the Family Health and Hearing Comm. Our next meeting will be on Sept 23 at 7:30 p.m., and it will be our annual Installation of Officers with Worthy State Grange Steward, Patrick Brewer and his team in charge. All are welcome to attend this annual open event. For more information about the Grange please visit www.mainestategrange.org or www.nationalgrange.com. "The Grange America's Family Fraternity."
