Editor:
I
was pleased to receive a refund from my insurance
company this week. This reduction in my insurance
rates is due entirely to the improved ISO rating that
the Town of Gray received, effective last July 1st.
I will save $82 each year.
I understand that this was due in part to the efforts
of the new full-time Gray Public Safety staff member,
Mike Barter, hired last year, along with the continuing
direction of Chief Barton. It seems to me that Mike's
contribution may have saved the taxpayers of Gray
the cost of his own salary during his first year of
service with the town.
I want to thank the Chief and Mike for reducing my
cost of living in Gray, while making it safer to live
here.

I
noticed that you had a chart that showed how the legislators
had voted on issues that support business. That is
probably interesting to some voters. I would be even
more interested in a chart that shows ho the legislators
vote on issues that support education, the mentally
ill, foster care, livable wage, the elderly, and health
care for uninsured children. I imagine that many people
in gray are intereted in these issues, too. Coulc
you please nvestigate these vites for us?
Thanks,

Many
thanks to Rep. Tom Allen for his long polemic informing
us that torture is a no-no. I always enjoy those rare
moments when I find myself in agreement with Rep.
Allen on anything. This enjoyment is offset by my
suspicion that passing a law that forbids "cruel,
inhuman or degrading treatment of prisoners.."
is by the very vagueness of those terms going to be
a bonanza for lawyers. Everyone from petty thieves
to the residents of Club Gitmo can sue the government
for being cruelly incarcerated, made to eat inhuman
prison food and being degraded by wearing orange clothes.
Defending these suits is not how I want to see our
tax dollars at work.
As
to the inquiry Rep. Allen is so very keen to conduct
-- are the alleged gulags allegedly being run by the
CIA for alleged terrorists really where Rep. Allen
needs to spend his effort or does he just enjoy being
on TV? Maybe he needs a gentle reminder that the U.S.
faces major challenges in the areas of immigration,
social security, and health care? Although addressing
those is hard work and doesn't get you on TV either.
President
Bush's approval rating is around 35%. The approval
rating of the Democrats in Congress is 25%. The approval
rating of the Republicans is 27%. Maybe Congress,
including Rep. Allen, needs to reconnect with the
real concerns of the "American Street".
