Obituary

In Memoriam

Glennis Flint Hetzler, 88 Gray - Glennis Merle Flint Hetzler, 88, died near midnight Sunday, November 13, 2005 at Mercy Hospital. She was born at home in Hollis on December 29, 1916, the daughter of Alfonzo French and Mamie Hearn Flint.

Glennis attended the Hollis- Buxton school systems and eventually graduated from the then Gorham Normal School in 1935 with an associate degree in elementary education. In addition to her academics she played on the basketball, baseball, hockey, volleyball, archery, and tennis teams, foreshadowing a lifelong interest in competitive sports. She also earned the nickname ³long-short², short in stature but long in effort and results. She taught for several years in the Buxton school system, where her students frequently towered above her.

In the early 1940's she took an additional job as switchboard operator at the fledgling Osteopathic Hospital of Maine in Portland where she met, and in 1943 eventually married, a young intern named Charles Robb Hetzler, who went on to become a surgeon. The family settled in South Portland. Two children followed, Glenn Robb in 1944 and Judy Ann in 1946.

In addition to being a housewife, Glennis also became licensed as a stockbroker and travel agent. She was very active in the women's auxiliary affiliated with the Osteopathic Hospital and continued her interest in sport with golf and bowling, playing in leagues and winning many trophies for her efforts. She loved to play cards, especially cribbage, and hated to lose! Her sense of humor was wry and there wasn¹t a child that she didn¹t charm and none she wasn¹t charmed by.

After a divorce in 1964 Glennis moved to Waterville where she worked in the local school system as a teacher's aide/mentor. She also worked for several years as a ward clerk at the then Thayer Hospital and later for the library at Colby College. Glennis was an avid traveler, exploring this country as well as Mexico, Europe, Egypt, and the Far East. After a move to Augusta, where she lived for many years, she moved to Apple Tree Village in Gray to be closer to her family, and was known as Nana by all.

Glennis is predeceased by a sister Hortense Flint Rowe(Œ96) and a brother Meredith Flint(Œ60); she is survived by one sister, Wilena Flint Rankin of Buxton. Her son Robb Hetzler, wife Jody Fein, her daughter Judy Shedd, husband Sean Shedd, her grandchildren Kristen, Robin, Heidi, Luisa, Jack, and Anna Rose, and great grandchildren Ryan, Brendan, and Magnolia Grace will miss her greatly, as will many others.

A memorial service will be held at the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church, 524 Allen Ave., Portland from 2-4 PM on Saturday, November 26, 2005.
