Who puts up the Cemetery flags?
By Terry Prince Tarsetti, Gray Post #86

The Gray American Legion thanks Norm Wilson for all the work he does getting all the flags out in the cemetery for Memorial Day weekend. When I spoke with him about it, lo and behold he sent me to the 4H club of Gray who are also an integral part of this important community service.

At the Gray cemetery on May 14th hard at work were 4-Hers Tyler, Adam, Leanne, Bob, Hannah, Emily, Martha, Ben, Dick and Wendy. These are just some of the members of the Gray 4H club who volumteer to place the flags.

For the last several years the Gray 4H club has been helping our cemetery crew put the flags on graves of Veterans buried in the various Gray cemeteries, the one adjacent to Whitney Tree, Skillings, in West Gray for Mr. Huff and Gray. The Gray Legion provides the holders and flags for Veterans buried there. It takes over two hours for the entire crew to place the flags.

Then I started to learn about 4H and that it isn't in fact just cooking and cows. There was a Flag and Flower Project introduced for youth to honor the people who served our country in the military and have a chance to meet and learn from living veterans. The 4H (and other youth groups) are flag and flower planting at the graves of veterans. The Monument: David Martineau photos

Flags and Flowers Project
If you and/or your group are interested in helping with the Flag and Flower Project for many years to come, the Maine 4-H is coordinating the project. They are inviting any group to help but especially youth organizations such as Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs, schools, etc. Youth is a powerful resource. All the information can be found at the Maine 4-H website link: http://www.maine4h.umaine.du/flagandflower.htm and the Youth Group Leaders' Form can be found at:
